Howden Engineering Office Block - 8 and 14 Scotland Street:
Sited on Scotland Street these former Engineering company offices are both blond sandstone ashlar buildings, with the lower two storey building to the west of the site originating in the 1860s, and the taller two storey building to the east dating from a slightly later time in the early 1870s. Both buildings were originally part of the Howden Engineering works, the main body of which was sited on the other side of Scotland Street to the west filling the site adjacent to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed Scotland Street school. These other buildings till largely survive, although they are not in use having also fallen into a derelict state and prey to vandalism and numerous malicious fires
The pair of buildings featured on this page are linked and currently lie derelict having had numerous tenants since Howden's, most recently a garage occupied the west building. The lower building to the west has eleven bays to Scotland Street on the first floor with arched windows. The ground floor is made up of seven bays, then a large drive-in doorway occupies the next two bays, then the final two bays revert to windows. The taller east building is four bays to the south onto Scotland Street, then the east elevation has six bays facing onto Paterson Street with all windows on each floor with arched tops. The rear of the buildings are windowless and faced with red brick. Both buildings are derelict and category B listed.

a large metal fixing bolted to the wall. Several of these are visible on the south wall of the west building, and they can be assumed to be bolted through the stone wall to act as structural supports to the wall to counteract the bulging in the wall which if left untreated could lead to potential collapse (04/05/2011)
