Clydesdale Paint Works:
Attributed to architects Hugh and David Barclay, this four storey former ashlar building is the former colour and oil works of the Clydesdale Paint company. Originally known as Blacklock and MacArthur the building has two carved stag heads on the first floor east elevation; one at each end of the facade. The Stag was the Blacklock and MacArthur company symbol and used on their 'Stag' brand of lead paints, colours, oils, greases and varnishes. The blond sandstone building is dated 1888, and has lain vacant and derelict for numerous years and has subsequently fallen into a state of very poor repair. The walls are largely saturated, with the attempts to cap the wallheads with blue plastic sheeting having failed, the brick gable wall can also be seen to be sodden. Many windows are smashed or missing, and the roof has now been largely removed. The sandstone facade is in a very poor condition with paint and render having been applied to large sections causing a great deal of erosion to the sandstone beneath now revealed as large sections of the paint and render has fallen away.
To the rear of the ashlar building are a pair of two storey workshops with cast-iron columns, and to the south a large adjoining Venetian red brick warehouse extension dated 1900.
There were proposals to retain the sandstone facade as the frontage for a new apartment block, however these plans have never come to fruition and now the entire building is scheduled for demolition sometime in 2013, its condition having been deemed too poor for retention, however the stonework may be re-used although this seems unlikely due to the heavy erosion and saturation the sandstone exhibits. The building is B-listed.
