Former British Linen Company Bank, 215 High Street:
The building is dated 1895, and formerly the British Linen Company Bank, the ground floor is still liveried with Robert Bell fruit merchant, but is currently vacant. The upper two floors are currently occupied and comprise of residential accomodation. A highly detailed red sandstone building, with a wooden turret on the north-east corner, a statue overlooking the front (east) High Street facade, and down the north elevation the building steps down to a single storey, then back up to a two storey west end of the structure. Overrall it is a unique, decorative and detailed small building now sitting isolated on High Street. The site opposite of the former High Street goods yard was long vacant but has recently been developed with large scale student accomodation blocks. The adjacent site to the south is currently vacant, the site to the north is the somewhat run down Old College Bar with very decayed buildings at the end of that site (see photographs). The first and second floors are accessed through a gated entrance on the north elevation, a stairway then provides access to these areas of the building. Category B listed.
